About the work
Original wood engraving by Huc-Mazelet Luquiens (1881-1961) of a Hawaiian landscape. Signed in pencil lower right, dated and annotated “Christmas Greetings - 1930” lower left. Also annotated in pencil by the artist lower left corner (under mat) “Original woodcut, H. M. Luquiens, Honolulu.”
A rich impression printed on wove paper, printed as a Christmas card with full sheet folded into fourths. Very good condition.
About the artist…
Luquiens is best known as a printmaker and teacher who lived in Hawaii during the 1920s and 30s. He was also the author of “Copper Plate Printing,” a 1928 pamphlet that was the Honolulu Academy of Arts first publication. Luquiens was a member of the University of Hawaii faculty, where art instruction was offered for the first time during the 1925-26 school year. He was later named head of the art department, a position he held until 1946. He co-founded the organization of Honolulu Printmakers. His work in the community and his outstanding prints made him a major figure in the art history of Hawaii. Biography sourced from askART.
