About the work
Original James Swinnerton comic strip featuring Little Jimmy and the Canyon Kiddies, dated 4-22-35 (King Features Syndicate, 1935). This desert adventure finds the assembled youngsters confronted with an unappetizing meal.
Ink on Strathmore Bristol Board. Strathmore embossed seal upper left corner of board. Light-to-moderate age-toning and scuffing within the art and margins. Affixed to foam core board backing sheet along top edge of Bristol Board. Overall very good condition.
A star player in the Hearst cartoon empire, Swinnerton (1875-1974) recovered from a bout with tuberculosis in 1906 by moving from New York to the fresh-air climates of California and Arizona. The locale inspired Canyon Kiddies, a lasting feature that dovetailed with Swinnerton's signature strip, Little Jimmy.
