About the items
R.C. Gorman is best known for his drawings, paintings and sculptures of colorful, blanketed, Navajo women, a fine example of which is represented by his tile composition and accompanying original drawing. The two works show Gorman’s trademark style of depicting Navajo women in simple, linear form, with striking colors.
The tile composition shows remarkable adherence to Gorman’s hand-drawn design, including extremely fine subtitles in line shape and width, along with the more obvious instructions on glaze colors. Such examples of Gorman’s original designs are scarce. Individual tiles measure 6 x 6 inches.
About the artist…
R.C. Gorman was born on the Navajo reservation at Chinle, Arizona, in the early 1930s. He was charming, flamboyant, and fascinating. His body of artwork focused on Navajo women, typically shown going about their chores in a seemingly placid manner. Gorman held deep reverence for women, which he called his “greatest inspiration.” His work shows considerable influence from the Mexican artists Tamayo, Rivera, and Zuniga, particularly the classic simplicity of the latter’s work.
Gorman’s works have been exhibited in numerous one-man shows in the United States and beyond. In 1973, he was the only living artist to be included in the "Masterworks of the Museum of the American Indian" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
His works are represented in the permanent collections of The Museum of Indian Arts, San Fransisco; The Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona; Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff; Philbrook Art Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma; U.S. Department of Interior, Washington, DC; Dallas Museum of Art, Texas; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; and the New Mexico Museum of Fine Art.
