About the work

This painting was gifted to the artist’s sister, then passed down by descent until acquired by Nevada Fine Art. The work is emblematic of Hamlin’s deep connection to Arizona and Tucson, where she lived and painted while married to Maynard Dixon. She recalled those years as the happiest of her life. 

Located northeast of Tucson, Tanque Verde began as a small community of pioneering ranchers who came west in the 1860s. The area is adjacent to Saguaro National Park East.

The painting is in excellent condition and housed in a hand-carved frame by Holton Studio Frame-makers of Berkeley, California.

About the artist… 

Edith Hamlin (1902-1992) was born in Oakland, California. She studied art at the California School of Fine Arts, followed by further studies at the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. 

A turning point in Hamlin’s artistic career came in 1932 when she visited Taos, New Mexico. The experience gave her a new perspective on western landscape, which evolved into the focus of her life’s work. 

In 1937 Hamlin married Maynard Dixon. Two years later the pair moved to Tucson, Arizona, where they painted western scenes in Arizona and Utah until Dixon's death in 1946. It was during this period that she painted Tanque Verde Autumn.
