About the work
As described in the extensive notes verso, this work was a 1922-23 commissioned copy of a painting in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art by the acclaimed desert landscape artist Albert Lorey Groll (1866 - 1952). A note in the upper left verso suggests the painting was turned over to owner Anthony Ballut of Tarrytown, New York, in December 1923. The original painting remains in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum to this day. The frame housing the DeWitt painting is original.
Jerome Pennington DeWitt (1895 - 1940) was born in New Jersey and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He was an art instructor and illustrator, and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He held membership in such groups as the Salmagundi Club, Salons of America, and Allied Artists of America.
