About the artist
Joe Ferrara (1932 - 2004) is best known for his traditional images of the Old West and Southwest, but he was also a successful commercial artist, sculptor, and wildlife painter.
Joe graduated from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He worked for several years as an illustrator in New Haven and Hartford, Connecticut, and in the early 1960s established his first studio in Hamden.
In the late 1960s he attracted national attention for creating artwork used in the Winchester calendar series. The calendars have a circulation of well over 400,000 and remain the envy of western collectors.
Joe later designed the packaging sleeve for Winchester’s John Wayne commemorative rifle. He is also highly respected for his gun engraving designs.
