About the Work

Walpi are Hopi Indian pueblos to the north-east of Flagstaff, Arizona. Pueblo was the Spanish name given to Indian communities with living-quarters built for permanence. The only permanent settlements the Indians are known to have made in Western America before the coming of Spanish explorers are located in Arizona and New Mexico.

About the artist…

John Cuthbert Hare (1908-1978) was a watercolorist best known for images of seascapes, harbor scenes, and ships. He is primarily associated with the New England area, especially Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he spent his summers in the 1930s to mid-60s. Hare traveled extensively with his wife during the 1930s, camping and exhibiting his work in galleries. He likely painted “Hopi Indian Pueblo” at Walpi, Arizona, during this period.

Hare was probably born in New York City. He studied art in Brooklyn at the Pratt Institute, and at the Art Students League in Manhattan. He worked for Hearst newspapers corporation before getting married in 1933.

The Hares visited Saint Augustine in the 1935 and two years later John set up a studio in a small home located at 33 Aviles Street. The house still stands today along the oldest street in the city. In the late 1930s the couple moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, and later to Yarmouth Port. During the last years of his life he lived and painted at Palm Beach, Florida.

Hare’s works reside in the collections of the Lowe Art Museum and the Lightner Museum in downtown St. Augustine, Florida, and at the Smith College Museum of Art at Northampton, Massachusetts.
