About the work
This colorful painting was exhibited in 1933 at the sixth annual state-wide art exhibition sponsored by the Santa Cruz, California, Art League (Santa Cruz Sentinel, 21 February, 1933). The original exhibition label is attached verso showing the title and artist’s Vallejo, California, address, along with an earlier label for a work titled “Job’s Peak, Gardnerville, Nev,” that was entered into the California State Fair at Sacramento.
Lulu Hawkins Braghetta (1901 - 1992) graduated from the University of Nevada before attending UC Berkeley where she earned an M.A. degree in 1934. She received additional art training in New York at the Art Students League from 1928 to 1929.
In the 1930’s, Braghetta studied at the Chouinard School of Art and became a professional sculptor with a studio in San Francisco. She contributed wall reliefs on Treasure Island for the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. Her sculpted bas reliefs are featured at the Berkeley High School Campus, which is now listed on the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places.
